Jongmyo Shrine, Seoul

Jongmyo Shrine is not as glamorous or famous like some other attractions in Seoul but is a very meaningful place for Korean history..
As a part of confucianism, when a king or queen dies they used to make a special storage that symbolizes him or her and kept it in this shrine. Basically it is the resting place for the souls of deceased kings and queens.
Just after the Joseon dynasty was built in 1394 they started to build Jongmyo and completed it in 1395.
So Jongmyo is the first building (even before the palace) built  in Joseon dynasty.  You can imagine how important it was for them.
The memorial services for the kings and queens are still performed every year.
Jongmyo gained a recognition as the oldest Royal confucian shrine in the world and was listed in the UNESCO World heritages in 1995.
